FAQs

Subscription-based brands: Primarily include Ring, Google Nest, Blink (for some features), and Arlo.

Advantages: Usually offer cloud storage (no worries about cameras being stolen or damaged), more accurate AI recognition (cloud computing power), and a more user-friendly app interface.

Disadvantages: High long-term costs; may not be able to record or view critical footage if the internet connection is lost.

Wi-Fi versions of cameras may also experience frequent disconnections and inability to record due to weak Wi-Fi signals. Battery-powered versions require regular charging or an external solar panel.

Subscription-free brands: Representative brands include Hikvision, Uniview, Dahua, Honeywell International, VIVOTEK, digitalwatchdog, speco, anycon, ivid, Ubiquiti UniFi, and others.

Advantages: One-time purchase, local storage via SD card or NVR hard drive, giving you control over your data privacy.

Disadvantages: Initial hardware investment may be higher; if the local storage is stolen, the recordings will be lost (unless backed up to a NAS).

PoE (Wired): Users generally consider this the best option.

Advantages: Extremely stable signal, not susceptible to signal interference, and a single network cable provides both power and data transmission.

Disadvantages: Difficult to wire, usually suitable for renovations or situations with attics/crawl spaces.

WiFi (Wireless): Suitable for rented apartments or places where wiring is not possible.

Advantages: Extremely easy to install. Suitable for small rooms and offices within WiFi coverage range.

Disadvantages: Prone to disconnections; a signal booster (WiFi booster) can be added (if it's a battery-powered version, it requires regular charging or an external solar panel).

Traditional cameras typically only capture dim, black-and-white, or noisy images in low-light conditions.

In the Past few years,Many manufacturers have new technologies involving a series of hardware and software innovations designed to capture clear, bright, and colorful images in extremely low-light environments.

Now,The latest technology is specifically designed to provide 24/7 full-color imaging, ensuring that color details are preserved even in complete darkness.

Traditional cameras: Typically can only detect the presence of "people" or "vehicles." For moving vehicles, ordinary cameras often fail to capture license plates clearly at night due to headlight glare.

Specialized cameras:

LPR dedicated cameras: Feature extremely high shutter speeds and anti-glare capabilities, specifically designed for capturing license plates of fast-moving vehicles.

Facial recognition: High-end commercial cameras or brands with powerful edge AI capabilities.

Commercial/Public Spaces:

In New York, if you wish to legally record in a public place (such as a restaurant or store), the safest practice is to post conspicuous signs (e.g., "Audio and Video Surveillance in Use"), which is legally considered a form of "implied consent."

Compliance Signs: In New York City, many properties install aluminum warning signs that comply with HPD (Department of Housing Preservation and Development) standards to clearly inform visitors and tenants that the area is under audio and video surveillance.

Regarding video surveillance retention times in New York State and New York City (NYC), the law does not mandate a uniform storage duration for typical private residences or ordinary retail stores. How long footage is retained primarily depends on the type of business, contractual requirements, and potential statutes of limitations for legal claims.

Private Residences and Standard Commercial Establishments (No Mandatory Legal Requirements)

Industry Practice: Most businesses and individuals typically choose to retain recordings for 30 days. This usually covers the discovery period for most credit card fraud, lost packages, or neighbor disputes.

"Legal Hold" in Special Circumstances

Even without a mandatory retention period, you must stop automatic overwriting and permanently retain recordings if any of the following situations occur:

Legal Proceedings or Subpoenas: If the recordings are relevant to ongoing litigation or you receive a court subpoena, you must retain them until the litigation concludes.

Personal Injury Claims: In New York, the statute of limitations for personal injury claims (such as a fall at the store entrance) is typically 3 years. If you anticipate a potential claim, retaining relevant recordings (including several hours before and after the incident) is crucial for protecting yourself.

Labor Disputes: Records involving employee accidents should, in some cases, be retained for up to 6 to 18 years (depending on specific compensation laws).

Practical Advice for New York City:

Business Insurance Requirements: Check your business insurance contract; some insurance companies require you to retain video footage for at least 30-60 days as evidence for claims.
